While a high-quality, crisp white shirt is the foundation of a pilot’s uniform, it is the peripheral details, like the tie, the epaulets, and even the hidden layers like undershirts, that make a look more polished and authoritative.

To achieve a truly command-ready appearance, you must look beyond the shirt. In this guide, we explore the essential accessories that complete the professional pilot look and how to choose pieces that stand up to the rigors of the flight deck.

1. Pilot Ties - How To Choose The Best One

If the pilot shirt is the most functional part of your kit, the tie is the most symbolic, and it’s definitely the centerpiece of your presentation. A poorly maintained tie can ruin a high-quality shirt, creating a distracting, unpolished silhouette.

In the cockpit, where ergonomics and focus are everything, your tie shouldn't be something you have to think about. Think about your typical day. You’re reaching for overhead panels, twisting to check circuit breakers, and leaning over center consoles. A traditional fashion tie, usually too long, too thick, or prone to slipping, is a liability. It gets caught in headset cords or dipped into a lukewarm cup of galley coffee.

Because the tie sits directly in the "V-zone" of your blazer or sweater, it’s often the first thing a passenger or check-airman notices.

When selecting a tie for flight ops, you have to balance the look with the reality of the job.

Fabric

Pure silk is the gold standard for weddings, but it’s a nightmare for aviation. Silk snags easily and water-spots if you even look at it wrong. Modern aviation ties use microfiber or high-grade polyester blends. They mimic the sheen of silk but offer "bounce back" from wrinkles. You can stuff them in a flight bag and they’ll still look crisp for your 5:00 AM sign-in.

Width

Avoid the extremes. You don’t want a 1970s wide blade, nor do you want a skinny "fashion" tie. A classic 3-inch to 3.25-inch width is the sweet spot, and it should end precisely at the top of your belt line.

Zipper vs. Self-Tie

There is a segment of the pilot community that insists on a self-tie Windsor knot. But when you’re waking up in a dim hotel room after four hours of sleep, fumbling with a knot is the last thing you want to do.

This is where zipper ties come in. A high-quality zipper tie provides a perfect, symmetrical knot every single time.

Jetseam’szipper ties are designed to be indistinguishable from a hand-tied knot, giving you the professional look without the morning struggle. Get yours today!

2. Men's and Women’s Undershirts

The job of an undershirt is to be the "silent partner" to your uniform. It absorbs moisture, protects your white shirt from body oils, and provides a layer of insulation in a drafty flight deck.

Without a proper base layer, body hair and skin tones can show through white fabric, especially under the harsh fluorescent lights of a terminal. However, the requirements for men and women are vastly different.

Men’s Undershirts Guide

A good pilot undershirt should sit neatly under your uniform without adding bulk or showing through. The key is choosing an undershirt that fits like an undershirt rather than a standard t-shirt, so it lies smoothly through the body.

Our bamboo cotton blend is designed with comfort in mind, offering a soft and breathable feel, so you can still feel fresh after long duty days. These materials are "moisture-wicking," meaning they pull sweat away from your skin and let it evaporate.

Whether you prefer a crew neck or a V-neck, the right undershirt should support a sharp, professional appearance while staying comfortable from take-off to landing.

Jetseam  men’s undershirts are designed for unrestricted movement and maximum moisture-wicking properties - just what you need and deserve. Find yours today.

Women’s Undershirts Guide

Female pilots face a unique challenge because their shirts are often more form-fitting.

A unisex undershirt is far too bulky, creating visible seam lines at the sleeves and waist that ruin the professional silhouette. That’s why a woman’s undershirt needs to be thin enough to feel like a second skin. This prevents the "seam line" from showing through the sleeves.

Depending on the cut of the uniform shirt, a wide scoop neck or a low V-neck is essential to ensure the base layer stays invisible.

The undershirt also needs to follow the natural curves of the body. In a seated position for 6-8 hours, any excess fabric will bunch around the midsection, causing discomfort and visible wrinkles in the outer shirt.

Jetseam’s  undershirts for women are designed by a woman, for female pilots. Comfort is our goal, and we deliver every time - get yours and see the quality for yourself.

3. Epaulets

No accessory is more synonymous with the profession than the epaulet.

Because epaulets sit on your shoulders, they are subject to constant, direct UV exposure through the cockpit windows. This is why "cheap" epaulets fade to a dull gray or sickly yellow within a few months. When your stripes look dingy, your entire uniform looks dated and tired.

So, what makes a pro epaulet?

  1. Reinforced Core- to prevent "curling", you need a durable internal stiffener. It should stay flat even if you’re constantly slinging a heavy flight bag over your shoulder.

  2. Colorfast Braiding- look for metallic or high-grade nylon braids that are treated to resist fading. Whether you're wearing the four stripes of a Captain or the three of a First Officer, those lines need to stay sharp and high-contrast.

  3. Friction Fit- they should slide onto your shirt’s shoulder loops with enough tension to stay centered. If they’re too loose, they’ll slide toward your back, making you look lopsided.

Jetseam  epaulets use the highest quality materials to ensure long-term endurance and a sharp look all day, every day. Get yours alongside a  white pilot shirt for the ultimate professional, practical look.
